DPW Offices, Sanitation Yards Closed January 6 Due to Approaching Winter Storm Mechanical Street Sweeping Suspended Until Further Notice

In response to the severe winter storm forecast for the region, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) will close its offices and sanitation yards on Monday, January 6, 2025. This announcement follows today’s decision by Mayor Brandon M. Scott to close Baltimore City Government due to the impending weather conditions.

Mechanical street sweeping operations will be suspended until further notice. Snow- and ice-filled curbs, combined with colder-than-normal temperatures, render street sweeping equipment ineffective.

While DPW does not schedule trash or recycling collections on Mondays, the department will monitor weather conditions and announce any necessary changes to the collection schedule after the storm.

DPW Facilities Affected by the Closure

The following DPW facilities will be closed to residents and haulers on January 6:

  • Northwest Transfer Station – 5030 Reisterstown Road
  • Quarantine Road Landfill – 6100 Quarantine Road
  • Northwest Residential Recycling Center – 2840 Sisson Street
  • Southwestern Residential Recycling Center – 701 Reedbird Avenue
  • Eastern Residential Recycling Center – 6101 Bowleys Lane

Emergency Services Remain Available

The City's 311 Call Center and DPW’s Utility Maintenance Crews will remain operational to address water or sewer emergencies.

  • Baltimore City residents should call 311 for assistance.
  • Baltimore County residents can call (443) 263-2220.
  • Service requests may also be submitted online or via the Balt311 mobile app, available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Winter Preparedness: Protect Your Pipes

As the winter storm approaches, DPW urges residents to take precautions to prevent frozen pipes. Follow these tips to help safeguard your home:

  1. Let Your Faucet Flow: Allow a thin stream of cold water to run from a faucet located in the basement or lowest level of your home.
  2. Keep Pipes Warm: Open cabinet doors to let warm air circulate around exposed pipes.
  3. Disconnect Outdoor Hoses: Remove hoses and shut off water to outdoor spigots to prevent freezing and damage.
  4. Stock Bottled Water: Be prepared for possible service disruptions by keeping bottled water on hand.
  5. Check Your Sump Pump: Test your sump pump periodically, especially as snow and ice begin to melt, to prevent basement flooding.

DPW will continue to provide updates as the storm progresses. Stay tuned for additional announcements regarding service adjustments.
