Extensive sewer infrastructure repairs and improvements by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) will require the closure of West Mulberry Street between Howard Street and Park Avenue on Friday, February 24. The closure will begin before the Friday morning rush hour and last about a week.

The street will be closed in order to install the final cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner on a 72-inch sewer pipe. CIPP lining helps to eliminate the possibility of additional collapses.

Sewer work in the Mulberry Street corridor is expected to be completed in early March, including the reopening of the roadways.

Since early last year, a series of infrastructure failures impacted portions of downtown Baltimore. When examining the collapses, DPW engineers decided to use these problems as an opportunity to secure long-term sewer infrastructure improvements to more than a mile of a major sewer collection main under the City.

In addition to the Mulberry Street corridor, DPW has been doing major sewer infrastructure work following last year’s sewer line failures in the nearby Mount Vernon neighborhood.  In Mount Vernon, the Charles Street area work is expected to be completed and roadways re-opened by mid-March, and Cathedral Street should be reopened by mid-April.
