Grasscycling: Cut it High and Let it Lie

Spring is here and lawn mowing is getting into high gear. The Department of Public Works encourages residents to recycle your grass clippings by letting clippings lie where they fall.  Grasscycling offers many benefits to the environment.  It protects the waterways by slowing runoff from rain and melting snow.  It also makes your grass grow thicker and healthier.
 
Here are a few tips for successful grasscycling : 

  • When mowing, let grass clippings fall and stay on the lawn. Grass clippings decompose rapidly and nourish the lawn, making it greener and healthier.
  • Mow your grass when it is between 3 and 4 inches tall. Grass grows thicker and healthier when it is kept at 3” tall.      
  • Use a mulching mower. Traditional and manual lawnmowers are also effective as long as you keep the blades sharp.
  • Mow at least once a week during peak growing season.
  • Mow your lawn when the grass is dry. Wet grass produces clumps that can smother the grass and clog your lawn mower.

Grasscycling is a win-win for everyone. It saves on yard raking chores, keeps grass and plastic lawn bags out of the landfill, prevents soil erosion, and nourishes the lawn.

Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Khalil Zaied reminds residents that Friday, July 4, 2025, is Independence Day, a City holiday. As a result, all DPW offices and sanitation yards will be CLOSED in observance of the holiday. There will be no trash or recycling collections on Friday, July 4. Collections will resume on the makeup day, Saturday, July 5, 2025. Additionally, there will be no street sweeping due to the holiday closure.
