BALTIMORE, MD (November 5, 2012) – Public Works Director Alfred H. Foxx announced today that due to heavy downpours over the recent months and additional sinkholes at the site, the storm drain / sinkhole repair near 2330 Monument Street will not be completed until December 19, 2012.
The original storm drain damage that resulted from the 40 foot sinkhole created on July 25, 2012, required 140 feet of the 120 year old storm drain to be repaired.  However two subsequent sinkhole incidents near the original location on August 26, 2012 and October 4, 2012, has tripled the original amount to be repaired to 423 feet. Hurricane Sandy created no additional damage.
“We understand and recognize the inconvenience this incident has created for the merchants and community”, said Director Foxx. “The Department will continue to meet regularly with those directly affected and work on the repair 24 hours / 7 days a week until the job is complete”
DPW is also taking a holistic approach to the water main that broke inside of the original sinkhole location.  Instead of just repairing the damaged section, the Department is upgrading 500 feet of the existing 6” main to a 12” pipe. The new main will run between Patterson Park Avenue and Montford Avenue, and will decrease the likelihood of a break occurring in the area in the near future.
DPW is continuing to work with BGE, Verizon, and other City agencies on the repairs.
