BALTIMORE, MD — The installation of new water meters under Baltimore City Department of Public Works’ (DPW) BaltiMeter program is making great progress. The remaining section of Baltimore City residential customers will start receiving their new meters within a few weeks.

 

Nearly 140,000 new water meters have already been installed. The final group of customers are located primarily in the north-central section of the City, from Charles Street to Harford Road. They will begin seeing notices arriving via mail around the end of August, and installations will begin shortly thereafter.

 

The new meters automatically relay water usage data to DPW. The process is designed to be efficient, reliable, and accurate.

 

The plan is to install all City meters by April of 2016. The majority of residential meters are expected to be installed by October. A few thousand customers will continue to have their meters installed once infrastructure issues that prevented installation are corrected. Commercial meter accounts in the City are also in progress.

 

Baltimore County water customers will also have their meters upgraded. The schedule for those customers has not yet been announced.

 

Along with meters, crews are also installing a network of wireless communication devices across the City that relay signals from the meters to the billing center. Each hour the meters send a signal with the updated water usage data.
