Baltimore City Public Works Director Rudolph S. Chow, P.E., today issued a reminder that swimming is not allowed in City reservoirs.  DPW Environmental Police have responded to a number of water-related emergencies since the arrival of seasonal hot weather.  Swimming in the reservoirs is extremely dangerous due to the cold temperatures of reservoir water and underwater hazards such as rapid drop-offs, currents, hidden rocks and branches.

Swimming in any City reservoir is a criminal trespass and punishable by up to $1,000 and/or 30 days in jail. “No Swimming” warning signs are posted at each of the reservoirs and also at Druid Lake, Lake Montebello and Lake Ashburton.

If you are visiting a city reservoir this weekend and observe anyone swimming or any other potentially unsafe practices, please call us 24/7 at 410 517-3600.  For emergencies dial 9-1-1.

Baltimore City has three raw-water reservoirs Prettyboy, Loch Raven and Liberty where visitors enjoy such activity as biking, hiking, and bird watching.  While swimming is not allowed, boating is allowed seasonally and requires a city permit.  Fishing requires a license.  In addition, all city, state and federal safety regulations must be followed.  For more information, visit publicworks.baltimorecity.gov.
