Today, Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) Acting Director Matthew W. Garbark announced that the Department will discontinue the operation of the Community Collection Centers located in each of the City’s 14 Council Districts. The last day for residents to drop off recycling at a Community Collection Center is Saturday, February 13.

DPW successfully resumed residential recycling collections on January 19, following a nearly six-month suspension of services due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Bureau of Solid Waste operations. The Community Collection Centers began operation on August 31, 2020, to provide residents with recycling opportunities during the suspension.

“I want to thank everyone who has utilized the temporary Community Collection Centers, and to extend my appreciation for the extra efforts that they took to continue to recycle,” Acting Director Garbark said. “The successful restart of the City’s recycling operations has indicated that it is time to conclude the operation of Community Collection Centers throughout the City and focus our resources on supporting residential recycling collections.”

From September 2020 to January 2021, residents dropped off nearly 3,220 tons of recycling at the Community Collections Centers located throughout the City.

Following the January 19 restart of residential recycling collections, DPW reduced the operation of Community Collection Centers to two days a week, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Since the restart of residential recycling, Wheelabrator Baltimore has managed the Community Collection Centers free of charge for the City.
