Annual Mitten Tree Campaign Kicks-off Tomorrow

BALTIMORE, MD (December 11, 2013) – As we enter the Holiday gift-giving season, Baltimore City Department of Public Works Director Alfred H. Foxx invites citizens and City employees to join Baltimore’s own giving campaign at the 40th Annual Mitten Tree program tomorrow, Thursday, December 12.

Collecting mittens, caps, gloves, and scarves are the focus of this annual City event. It begins at 11 a.m. with music by the Department of Public Works/ Department of Transportation Employee Band & Singers, and continues with two school choirs and a special appearance by Santa Claus. The program will be held in the lobby of the Abel Wolman Municipal Building, 200 N. Holliday Street.

At 11:30 a.m., Director Foxx will be joined by Department of Transportation Director William M. Johnson, Fleet Managment Division Chief, Department of General Services, Chichi Nyagah-Nash and Major Gene Hogg from the Salvation Army for the official kick-off of the campaign. Performers include the Abbottson Elementary School and Franklin Square Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club choirs. At the end of the program, the Jolly Old Elf will help toss the first mittens onto the tree.

Citizens and Baltimore City employees are encouraged to leave donations of mittens, gloves, hats and scarves in the collection bin in the Wolman Building lobby through Thursday, December 20.

Mittens, caps, gloves, and scarves collected are donated to those in need through the Salvation Army’s Franklin Square Boys and Girls Club located at 215 Calhoun Street in West Baltimore.

Baltimore City and County Submit Initial Water Service Line Inventory to MDE Part of a Nationwide Effort to Remove Lead Lines from Water Systems

On Tuesday, October 15, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Baltimore County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPWT) submitted their initial water service line inventory to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). This submission is part of a nationwide effort, led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to identify and eliminate lead and galvanized pipes from water distribution systems.

DPW is Now Accepting Public Comments on the Modified Sanitary Sewer Consent Decree Revised Emergency Response Plan 

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW)  has announced the release of its Revised Emergency Response Plan (ERP), a reference tool to be used by City personnel during a sanitary sewer overflow or reported building backup emergency. The Modified Sanitary Sewer Consent Decree (MCD) requires DPW to submit a revised Emergency Response Plan to protect the public health and welfare in the event of an unpermitted release, spill, or discharge of pollutants from the sewer collection system or in the event of a reported building backup.
