Liberty Reservoir Day 2013: A Celebration of Our Reservoir, Watershed and the People Who Protect Them

BALTIMORE, MD (July 15, 2013) – Public Works Director, Alfred H. Foxx reminds everyone that the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold the first Liberty Reservoir Day on Saturday, July 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Liberty Dam, Liberty Dam Rd., 21104. The event will celebrate and educate attendees about Liberty Dam and Reservoir, one of Baltimore's three raw drinking-water reservoirs.                                                                  

This fun-filled family event will feature live entertainment from Baltimore-based folksong singer D.T. Huber, emergency vehicle displays, face-painting, food trucks, giveaways and much more. Attendees will also receive American flags to celebrate the liberty theme of this event. Active and former military members with ID will receive discounts on food purchases.

Attendees can visit the Dam’s observation deck, which will be open only for this special day to learn about Baltimore's drinking water system, resource issues and conservation efforts. Rescued native animals will be on display, presented by experts who will tell visitors about them. In addition, attendees will see demonstrations from the Chesapeake Search Dogs, three fire companies and local police officials.

“We are excited about highlighting Liberty Dam and Reservoir which are important parts of our regional drinking-water system,” says DPW Director Alfred H. Foxx. “This is also a wonderful opportunity for families to both learn about the people who protect us and to have fun.”

Participating organizations include:
Baltimore City Department of Public Works, Gamber & Community Fire Company, Liberty Road Volunteer Fire Company, Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Baltimore Environmental Police, Chesapeake Search Dogs, Scales and Tales, Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability, and the Carroll County Department of Land Use, Planning and Development.

Baltimore City and County Submit Initial Water Service Line Inventory to MDE Part of a Nationwide Effort to Remove Lead Lines from Water Systems

On Tuesday, October 15, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Baltimore County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPWT) submitted their initial water service line inventory to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). This submission is part of a nationwide effort, led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to identify and eliminate lead and galvanized pipes from water distribution systems.

DPW is Now Accepting Public Comments on the Modified Sanitary Sewer Consent Decree Revised Emergency Response Plan 

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW)  has announced the release of its Revised Emergency Response Plan (ERP), a reference tool to be used by City personnel during a sanitary sewer overflow or reported building backup emergency. The Modified Sanitary Sewer Consent Decree (MCD) requires DPW to submit a revised Emergency Response Plan to protect the public health and welfare in the event of an unpermitted release, spill, or discharge of pollutants from the sewer collection system or in the event of a reported building backup.
