City Reports Sewer Overflow

BALTIMORE, MD (March 15, 2013) – The Department of Public Works today announced that a sanitary sewer overflow has been stopped in the Herring Run. The overflow was caused by a fallen tree which broke a manhole stack in the stream near the intersection of Stonewood Road and Hillen Road.  

The damage and subsequent overflow was first reported on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. The discharge was stopped through the use of by-pass pumps at 6:00 P.M. the next day. The damaged manhole stack is currently being repaired. DPW is monitoring water quality impacts as a result of the overflow.  

The overflow discharge volume into the Herring Run is estimated at approximately 336,000 gallons.   

The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Baltimore City Health Department have been notified. Notification signs have been posted at the stream. For more information about health concerns as a result of the overflow, contact the Baltimore City Health Department at 410-396-4422.
