City DPW Reports Sanitary Sewer Overflow Stopped

BALTIMORE, MD (July 30, 2014) – The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that a sanitary sewer overflow, originating in the 2100 block of Washington Boulevard, released an estimated 43,000 gallons of sewage into the Gwynns Falls over a two week period. The flow was estimated at two gallons per minute, and it was diverted back into the sanitary sewer through a temporary pipe. A contractor is working on the permanent repair.

The overflow was reported on Sunday, July 13, and corrected on Monday, July 28th. The cause was a broken 15 inch diameter sewer line. The stream was posted with warning notices throughout this period.

The Department of Public Works encourages residents to report suspected sewer overflows to 311. The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Baltimore City Health Department have been notified of this event.

Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Khalil Zaied reminds residents that Friday, July 4, 2025, is Independence Day, a City holiday. As a result, all DPW offices and sanitation yards will be CLOSED in observance of the holiday. There will be no trash or recycling collections on Friday, July 4. Collections will resume on the makeup day, Saturday, July 5, 2025. Additionally, there will be no street sweeping due to the holiday closure.
